Police patrol officers have foiled an armed robbery in Ssemwogerere Zone, Nakawa Division in Kampala District, killing one of the suspects during a pursuit operation.

Preliminary reports indicate that at around 00:50 hours, a businessman and his wife were walking along Mukasa Road when they were ambushed by three armed men. The suspects ordered the couple to lie down at gunpoint, and the victims complied.

The attackers then robbed the businessman of his mobile phone and wallet. As they turned to demand the woman’s phone, police officers on motorcycle patrols arrived at the scene.

On seeing the officers, the suspects attempted to flee, abandoning a bag believed to contain stolen items and a firearm.

Police immediately gave chase, and during the operation one unidentified male suspect, estimated to be about 25 years old, was shot dead.

A search of the scene led to the recovery of several exhibits, including: a SAR rifle, a bayonet, four smartphones suspected to have been stolen, two black shaving machines, three black jackets, one empty cartridge, a screwdriver, a pair of red canvas shoes, and a black laptop bag.

The body of the deceased suspect was taken to Mulago City Mortuary for postmortem examination as investigations continue.
