Medal table at Tokyo Olympics: Uganda finishes second in Africa

Uganda has registered by far its best performance in the Olympics history as the 2020 Olympics games concluded today in Tokyo, Japan. The pearl of Africa leaves Tokyo ranked 9th in Athletics and 36th overall amongst 206 countries that participated in the edition.

In Africa, Uganda has been the second best behind Kenya.  Uganda’s impressive numbers stand at 4 medals, which include 2 gold, 1 silver, and 1 bronze.

Uganda’s medals were won by Joshua Chepetegei (Gold in 5000m and silver in 10,000m), Jacob Kiplimo (Bronze in 10,000m) and Peruth Chemutai (Gold in Steeplechase).

The biggest African representative is Kenya. In total, Kenya won 10 medals which include 4 gold, 4 silver, and 2 bronze. On the overall medals standings, Kenya with its 10 medals finished 19, with Uganda positioned at 36.

 The next African country is South Africa with a total of 3 medals – 1 gold and 2 silver, placing it at number 52. Egypt and Ethiopia  with 6 and 4 medals respectively. Egypt has 1 gold, 1 silver and 4 bronze while 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze.

Overall, United States came top with 39 gold, 41 silver, 33 bronze making a total of 113 medals all together. China is placed second with 88 medals all together (38 gold, 32 silver and 18 bronze).

Hosts Japan wrap up the top 3 with 58 medals in total (  27 gold, 14 silver and 17 bronze).
