Makerere University Guild President James Churchill Ssentamu, son of Fred Nyanzi, alias Chairman Nyanzi—Bobi Wine’s brother—has said that his photo with President Yoweri Museveni was non-political, explaining that he attended the event solely in his capacity as Guild President, representing the students he leads.
While addressing the media this morning at Makerere University, Churchill said he understands the anger of those criticizing him, but the photo moment was not meant to express any political allegiance.
“I understand their anger; I don’t blame them,” Churchill said.
He further explained why he could not turn down the photo opportunity, saying he represents over 45,000 students with diverse political minds and beliefs.
“I am the new Guild President and have to serve the constituency that voted for me. The role of the Guild President includes presiding over functions and ceremonies because I am the students’ representative. I don’t choose the Chief Guest; I am invited like everyone else,” he said, before asking those criticizing him to enhance tolerance of diversity.
On the issue of his father asking him to apologize or even resign, Churchill said:
“I have heard my father’s comments, and I see where he’s coming from. He has a right, and I respect him. But I am the Guild President, and I have to perform my duties.”
When asked if he’s still a member of the National Unity Platform (NUP), he said, “I am still a member of the National Unity Platform. I have never been suspended from the party.”
Last month, Churchill was declared the 91st Guild President of Makerere University after he garnered the most votes—3,459.
He ran as an independent candidate after NUP’s pressure group, People Power, endorsed Ismail Basalirwa as their candidate in the guild race. In the People Power primaries, Ssentamu finished second with 214 votes, while Basalirwa won with 232 votes.
