At least 10 suspects broke out of Jinja Central Police Station (CPS) in the early hours of Sunday morning, authorities have confirmed.
According to police sources, the detainees managed to escape by pushing against the weak walls of the holding cells, causing them to collapse. In the process, they reportedly overpowered the guards before fleeing to unknown locations. Jinja CPS was constructed in 1928.
Among the escapees are repeat offenders with multiple prior arrests. Kiira Regional Police spokesperson James Mubi confirmed the incident, revealing that 12 officers who were on duty at the time have been arrested and are currently being held at Nalufenya Police Station.
Mubi also stated that one of the escapees has since been re-arrested and will face additional charges for escaping from lawful custody. Meanwhile, the Kiira Regional Police Command is reviewing security protocols at Jinja CPS to prevent future breakouts.
