The Uganda Cranes face a crucial test tonight as they take on Guinea at Namboole Stadium in a high-stakes Group G match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers. Kickoff is set for 7 PM.
After a 3-1 loss to Mozambique last Thursday, Uganda finds itself in a difficult position, sitting second from the bottom in the group with just six points from five matches. A win is essential to keep their World Cup hopes alive.
Head coach Paul Put has to deal with some key absences. Forward Denis Omedi is suspended after receiving a red card, while captain Khalid Aucho remains doubtful due to an injury sustained in training. However, Uganda will receive a boost with the return of Rogers Mato, who is available after serving a suspension.
This is Uganda’s third home fixture in the qualifiers. They previously suffered a 2-1 defeat to Algeria before grinding out a 1-0 win over Botswana. When they faced Guinea earlier in the campaign, they lost 2-1.
Guinea’s qualification campaign took a hit after a goalless draw against Somalia in their last outing.
With only group winners earning automatic qualification to the 2026 FIFA World Cup in USA, Canada, and Mexico, Uganda must secure maximum points to stay in contention. The four best second-placed teams will still have a chance to qualify through the Inter-Confederation Playoffs.
Despite the tough road ahead, head coach Paul Put remains hopeful:
“Guinea has quality players competing at a high level in Europe, but we also have a strong team capable of competing in our own way. I believe in my players and the support behind us,” he stated.
