Winnie Byanyima, wife of veteran politician and four-time presidential candidate Dr. Kizza Besigye, has confirmed that her husband is on a hunger strike at Luzira Prison.
According to Byanyima, Besigye’s hunger strike is a protest against his alleged illegal detention at Luzira Prison following the Supreme Court’s ruling.
“Kizza Besigye is on a hunger strike, detained illegally by a regime that fears his defiance more than it respects the law. This is not just an attack on him—it is an attack on every Ugandan who dares to demand justice,” Byanyima said in a post on X (formerly Twitter).
She added, “They think they can break his spirit, but they underestimate his resolve. Besigye will not yield while the regime tramples on justice. His fight is my fight. I will stand with him. Stand for justice. Stand with Besigye.”

Over a week ago, the Supreme Court directed the government to transfer cases involving civilians, including Besigye, to civil courts, ruling that civilians should not be tried in military courts.
On Tuesday, Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuzi told Parliament that the process of transferring the files is underway, urging affected parties to remain patient.
Besigye and Hajji Obed Lutale are charged with unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.
