The Uganda Rugby Union (URU) has announced the rebranding of its Elite and Tier 2 Club rugby competitions as part of a broader strategy to align the structure of its competitions.
The renaming and realignment of these competitions are vital steps in creating a structured, professional, and marketable rugby ecosystem in Uganda.
Effective immediately, the Uganda Rugby Championship—the Elite Tier club rugby competition in the country—will be renamed the Uganda Rugby Premiership (URP), reflecting the competition’s format, which includes both a round-robin stage and playoffs.
The Uganda Rugby Premiership now serves as the top tier of rugby in the country. Additionally, the regional rugby leagues, which also serve as promotional leagues, will be renamed as Championships.
The four regional leagues will be designated as the Eastern Rugby Championship (ERC), Central Rugby Championship (CRC), Northern Rugby Championship (NRC), and Western Rugby Championship (WRC).
These changes apply uniformly to both the men’s and women’s leagues, with the Uganda Women’s Rugby Premiership (UWRP) and the North (NWRC), Central (CWRC), West (WWRC), and Eastern (EWRC) Women’s Championships, respectively.
