The family of the late Muhammad Ssegirinya has endorsed Alex Lusswa Luwemba as his political successor for the now-vacant Kawempe North Member of Parliament seat. Luwemba had been working as the late Ssegirinya’s Personal Assistant.

Ssegirinya’s mother, Justine Ssanyu Nakajumba, stated that he has the capacity to continue the late MP’s legacy in Kawempe North. She mentioned that Ssegirinya had many unfinished dreams for the constituents, and Luwemba is the right person to fulfill them.

“We are confident that the people of Kawempe North will not regret supporting him,” Nakajumba said.

Meanwhile, the family’s endorsement faces competition from within. Twayira Akandiida, one of Ssegirinya’s widows, also declared her intention to run for the parliamentary seat, stating that she was very close to her husband during his time in office and can easily fit into his shoes to lead the people of Kawempe North.

“I believe I have the skills and knowledge to serve the people of Kawempe North,” she said.

During Ssegirinya’s burial on Sunday, the National Unity Platform, the party to which Ssegirinya belonged, announced that they would follow their party procedures to choose a candidate to run on their ticket in the by-election.

The Electoral Commission is expected to conduct a by-election within 60 days.
