Members of Parliament have contributed Shs 300,000 each, totaling Shs 150 million, to support the family of the late Hon. Muhammad Ssegirinya.
The fundraising took place during today’s parliamentary session to pay tribute to the late Kawempe North legislator.
Speaker Anita Among led Parliament in honoring Ssegirinya, describing him as a friendly and loving person whose work and generosity enabled him to represent his constituents in the 11th Parliament with dedication and passion.
Opposition MPs criticized Ssegirinya’s prolonged incarceration without bail, citing it as a key factor that contributed to the deterioration of his health.
“While in prison, Ssegirinya fell sick, and his condition kept deteriorating day by day. He was constantly denied bail despite his worsening condition. Even when government doctors recommended specialized treatment for him that warranted bail, the judge still sent him back to prison, where his condition worsened each day,” said Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of Opposition.
He added, “His lawyers presented medical records signed by government doctors, pleading for his release on bail to seek specialized treatment. Still, the judge said no and sent him back to jail.”
Ssegirinya’s body is currently at Mbogo Mosque in Kawempe and will later be taken to his home in Kasangati.
On Saturday, the body will be transported to Butale in Masaka, where he will be laid to rest on Sunday.
