A woman has been arrested in Tororo Municipality for allegedly torturing her 9-year-old cousin after the child failed to complete household chores.
Norah Akumu, a nurse at St. Valentine Medical Center and resident of Water Village in Tororo’s Western Division, reportedly assaulted the minor—a Primary Four pupil at Rock View Primary School—on Saturday. The child was accused of failing to wash dishes, make her bed, and clean her innerwear.
Noah Okumu, the Central Parish councillor, found the distressed child crying for help on a veranda in Water Village. The minor had visible injuries, including a bleeding and swollen mouth. Upon inquiry, the child revealed that Akumu had beaten her severely with a cane, and when the cane broke, Akumu resorted to biting her.
Okumu immediately reported the matter to local authorities. Akumu was subsequently summoned to the Water Village Police Post for questioning. However, during her interrogation, she reportedly attempted to intimidate the police officers, dismissing the incident as a “family matter” and questioning their involvement.
