Residents of Bumwenha B Village in Malongo Sub-county, Mayuge District, have lynched Moses Wepukulu, 41, after his brother Martin Sangula, 38, allegedly mutilated 18-year-old Peter Munghala by severing his penis instead of performing a traditional circumcision.
The incident happened during the Imbalu ceremony, a cultural event for the Bagisu people, which marks the transition of boys into manhood.
According to reports, disagreements broke out among the crowd about the manner in which the circumcision was being conducted.
In the ensuing commotion, Sangula allegedly mishandled the procedure, accidentally cutting off Munghala’s penis instead of the foreskin.
Munghala was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is currently receiving medical treatment.
Outraged by the incident, locals turned their anger on the two brothers. They fatally attacked Wepukulu on the spot, accusing him of complicity in the mishap.
Sangula narrowly escaped mob justice as the area LCI Chairman, Mubarak Bogere intervened.
The Imbalu ceremony, integral to Bagisu cultural identity, is intended to uphold traditional practices and preserve cultural heritage.
