Uganda’s path to AFCON 2025 qualification hinges on a must-win scenario in their upcoming match and the outcome of another key fixture.
To secure a spot in next year’s tournament in Morocco, Uganda must not only win their game, but also hope that South Africa defeats Congo in Brazzaville. The South Sudan-Uganda game kicks off at 4pm while the Congo-South Africa fixture starts at 7pm.
The Uganda Cranes, who have missed out on the last two editions of the AFCON finals, are determined to return to the continental stage. A victory for them, combined with a South Africa win over Congo, would guarantee their place in the finals.
For South Sudan’s Bright Stars, victory is the only option if they are to keep their slim hopes of qualifying for their first-ever AFCON finals alive.
If Uganda and South Africa both win, Uganda would climb to 10 points, while Congo and South Sudan would be left with just three and zero points, respectively, with two qualifiers remaining.
Uganda approaches this match with momentum, having edged South Sudan 1-0 last Friday at Namboole Stadium. They’ll be aiming to replicate that success and secure another crucial three points.
Should Uganda fail to win in Juba, their qualification hopes will hinge on their remaining fixtures next month against South Africa (home) and Congo (away).
