AFCON 2025 Qualifiers Draw: Here’s what you need to know as Uganda Cranes await their fate

The Uganda Senior Men’s National Football Team, the Uganda Cranes, will learn which teams they will face in the Africa Cup of Nations 2025 Qualifiers on Thursday.

The draw for the flagship African competition will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa, at 1:30 PM EAT. The draw will determine the pathway to qualification for AFCON 2025, which will be held in Morocco.

The 48 participating nations will be divided into 12 groups of four teams each, with the top two teams from each group qualifying for the final tournament.

The 48 teams have been seeded into four pots of 12 teams each, based on the most recent FIFA World Rankings. Teams in the same pot cannot be drawn into the same qualification group.

The Uganda Cranes are in Pot 2, alongside Cape Verde, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Zambia, Benin, Angola, Namibia, Mozambique, and Madagascar.

Here is the breakdown of the pots:

  • Pot 1: Morocco (hosts AFCON 2025), Senegal, Egypt, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, Tunisia, Algeria, Cameroon, Mali, South Africa, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Ghana
  • Pot 2: Cape Verde, Burkina Faso, Guinea, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Zambia, Benin, Angola, Uganda, Namibia, Mozambique, and Madagascar
  • Pot 3: Kenya, Mauritania, Congo, Tanzania, Guinea-Bissau, Libya, Comoros, Togo, Sudan, Sierra Leone, Malawi, and Central African Republic
  • Pot 4: Niger, Zimbabwe, Rwanda, The Gambia, Burundi, Liberia, Ethiopia, Botswana, Lesotho, Eswatini, South Sudan, and Chad
