Superintendent of Police, Gilbert Arinaitwe Bwana, a police officer who gained notoriety in 2011 for vandalizing Dr. Kizza Besigye’s car and pepper-spraying him at Mulago Roundabout, has been committed to stand trial in the High Court for allegedly raping his housemaid at gunpoint. He also faces charges of aggravated trafficking in persons.
The committal papers, presented before Buganda Road Court Chief Magistrate Ronald Kayizzi by senior State Attorney Ivan Kyazze, mark the completion of investigations. His Worship Kayizzi ordered Arinaitwe, attached to the Crime Intelligence Headquarters, to report to the High Court Criminal Division every last Thursday of the month, starting from July 25, 2024.
Arinaitwe first appeared in court on August 10, 2023, and was released on a cash bail of Shs 2 million on charges related to sexually exploiting his housemaid. According to court documents, Arinaitwe allegedly recruited, transported, and harbored a 23-year-old woman, Joan Namukasa, for purposes of sexual exploitation.
Prosecution states that on June 23, 2023, at his home in Nalumunye-Bandwe, Kyengera Town Council, Arinaitwe used deception, threats, and abuse of power to force the victim into involuntary servitude or debt bondage, contrary to the Prevention of Trafficking Act (2009).
