Police in Kampala are investigating the circumstances under which a private security guard attached to Security Group Africa (SGA) shot himself dead while on duty. The incident happened at a fuel station in Kinyarwanda village, Nakawa Division, in Kampala.
The deceased, identified as John Bosco Bakya, was allegedly approached by a yet-to-be-identified man who asked him to watch over his Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UEO 570E, for a night. He reportedly paid the guard Shs1000.
However, in the morning, the guard realized that the motorcycle had been stolen.
One of the guard’s colleagues, Siliwan Apeti, is quoted as telling police, “I tried to comfort him, and he seemed to have listened. But when I was a few meters away from him, I heard a gunshot sound.”
Deputy Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, confirmed the incident, saying that they were alerted by the fuel station staff and sent their officers to the scene. They collected the cartridges and the gun.
Owoyesigyire noted that Bakya should have reported the loss to his superiors or the police, and a search for the motorcycle could have been launched.
He explained that the police are investigating the incident to determine if foul play was involved.
