It might sound strange, but surely it’s true! Gravity Omutujju’s “Okwepicha” song has just landed a spot in the new British series, Queenie.
The show follows the life of Queenie, a 25-year-old Jamaican-British woman navigating the ups and downs of life in South London.
“Okwepicha” is one of the soundtracks in the episode. The song has a catchy beat and a great vibe.
The song, which was released in 2023, was dissed by many music critics. However, it became a hit as even a child as young as 4 years old could sing at least a few words of the chorus.
On YouTube, it has about 2 million views. Just like it was a shock that it became a hit in Uganda, it’s now even more shocking that it has broken barriers across the globe.
Meanwhile, this isn’t the first time Ugandan music has been used on an international stage. Eddy Kenzo’s “Mbilo Mbilo” was used in the movie Holiday In The Wild. Also, Pia Pounds’ “Tupaate” was used in the reality show, Young, Famous & African.
We are still investigating if Gravity pocketed some pounds for this milestone. We promise to update you on this.
