Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, is set to hold a private meeting with Pope Francis in August.
According to a letter from the Ambassador of Uganda to Italy, Stephen Mubiru, dated May 27, the speaker wrote a letter on March 5 requesting to meet the Pope. The agenda of the meeting is unknown.
However, H.E. Stephen Mubiru has confirmed that the meeting has been granted. The letter to the Clerk of Parliament reveals that the meeting will be held on Saturday, August 24, 2024.
Nonetheless, there are conditions to be met before the meeting. Speaker Among has been requested to provide the Vatican with the address of the place where she will be residing and a list of the people who will accompany her.
She will be received by Pietro Cardinal Parolin, the Secretary of State for the Pope. It will be the second time Among will be meeting Pope Francis in the last year, having done so in July 2023.
The letter surfaces at a time when Speaker Among is facing sanctions from the US and UK governments for her alleged involvement in corruption.
