The police Crime Intelligence and Flying Squad have raided several gyms in the Kampala Metropolitan area and arrested multiple suspects who they say are involved in the recent ‘flying kicks’ attacks intended to incapacitate innocent Ugandans before robbing them.
According to Fred Enanga, the police spokesperson, most of the suspects draw inspiration from movies and use private boxing gyms in various suburbs to perfect their Kung Fu skills.
Enanga further revealed that of the 30 suspects who have been arrested, the majority are juveniles between the ages of 12 and 18. These individuals are not yet adults according to the law, and when arrested and taken to court, they are remanded to juvenile homes and not prison.
He also said that a few of the arrested suspects are ex-convicts.
Recently, there have been several ‘flying kick’ attacks captured on CCTV. One occurred along Wavamuno Road in Munyonyo, where an Ethiopian national who was walking was kicked before being robbed. The most recent incident was captured along Ben Kiwanuka Street. The victim was kicked and robbed of Shs450k among other valuables. Three suspects were arrested, and on Monday, they were taken back to recreate the scene.
