Buhweju District Member of Parliament (MP) Francis Mwijukye was attacked by machete-wielding assailants on Sunday at Rwanyamabare Catholic Church, Butare Parish, where he was attending mass.
Reports indicate that the church has been embroiled in land issues with a local lawyer, whom residents suspected of orchestrating the attack.
Deputy Kampala Lord Mayor Doreen Nyanjura, who belongs to the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party just like Mwijukye, revealed through her social media pages that she had spoken to the MP.
“I have just talked to Hon Francis Mwijukye, who is currently admitted at a health facility in Mbarara city after sustaining deep cuts on the head by machete-wielding Kanyamas,” said Nyanjura in a post.
She further stated that the MP was attacked by machete-wielding thugs who she claims were commanded by one Edwin Burimbare.
“The Kanyamas, armed with pangas, dispersed the congregation during prayers! Seven people sustained injuries including Kyarisima, a journalist with TV West who was severely beaten and had his cameras destroyed,” she said.
Meanwhile, the MP has yet to make an official statement about the incident.
