The Ministry of Internal Affairs has claimed that Ugandans abroad are selling passports to foreigners for survival and later seeking replacements at different Ugandan embassies.

While addressing journalists earlier this week, Simon Peter Mundeyi, the Ministry’s spokesperson, said, “We have received information that some have sold off their passports for $5000 to wrongdoers and committed crimes, which is illegal and damages the reputation of Ugandan passports in foreign countries.”

Mundeyi further noted that this practice will no longer be possible, as Ugandans who lose their passports will now have to return to Uganda to have their lost passports replaced after undergoing thorough investigations and questioning.

He explained that the move is intended to protect the integrity of Ugandan passports, which has been tarnished.

In the past, citizens who lost their passports while abroad would go to Ugandan embassies with passport offices to renew their lost passports once they fulfilled all the necessary requirements.
