Police have arrested eight of their officers attached to Kira Police Division for allegedly stealing Shs62 million from a Shs192 million cash exhibit.
While addressing journalists at the weekly media briefing at Police Headquarters in Naguru, Police Spokesperson Fred Enanga stated that out of the Shs192 million stolen from Shatrah Namata, an employee of a hardware shop in Lungujja last week, only Shs160 million reached the Police.
“The lady informed the Police that they were going to deposit Shs192 million, but the first mistake the officers made was not counting the money immediately at the scene, making it difficult to determine whether it was Shs160 million or Shs192 million,” Enanga said.
He further explained that of the Shs160 million reported by the officers at the Police station, an additional Shs30 million was lost during the counting process.
“Our cameras show that when the money reached the Police counter, some of our officers poured it onto the floor for counting. It was during this process that another Shs30 million was stolen by the officers,” he said.
An investigation team has since arrested eight police officers as investigations continue.
Last week, the police thwarted a Shs192 million robbery, arresting two thugs who were traveling in a Toyota Noah vehicle with registration number UBN 360N. The thugs were intercepted at Naalya roundabout by police patrols and boda boda riders who initiated the chase after Shatrah Namata raised an alarm.
Two suspects were arrested during the pursuit; one fleeing suspect was shot and injured before his accomplices were apprehended. A bag of cash was recovered and taken as evidence to Kira-Division Police.
