The US government has joined the UK in imposing sanctions on Speaker Anita Among. Unlike the UK sanctions, which only targeted Speaker Among, the US sanctions also affect her husband, Eng. Moses Magogo. The FUFA boss is included on the list due to his wife’s alleged violations.
According to a statement from the US Department of State, Speaker Among is sanctioned due to her alleged involvement in corruption tied to her leadership of Parliament.
The list also includes other Ugandan officials: former Minister of Karamoja Affairs Mary Goretti Kitutu, former Minister of State for Karamoja Affairs Agnes Nandutu, and Minister of State for Finance Amos Lugolobi.
These officials are being designated for their involvement in corruption related to the misuse of public resources and the diversion of materials from the neediest communities (Karamoja iron sheets). The department also sanctioned Kitutu’s spouse, Michael George Kitutu, and Lugolobi’s spouse, Evelyne Nakimera.
“All the officials abused their public positions for their personal benefit at the expense of Ugandans,” reads the statement in part.
Additionally, Gen. Peter Elwelu, the former Deputy Chief of the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), is designated due to his involvement in gross violations of human rights.
Gen. Elwelu is accused of commanding UPDF forces in extrajudicial killings committed by members of the UPDF in Kasese in 2016. At least 100 people, including 15 children, were killed during the incident.
“As a result of these actions, the designated Ugandan officials are generally ineligible for entry into the United States,” reads the statement.
