How hospital staff connived to steal one of the newborn twins from mother while she was asleep

Koboko General Hospital.

Police in Koboko are investigating the theft of a newly born female twin from Koboko General Hospital. The incident occurred on March 29 at around 8 pm. However, it is said that the matter was reported to the police after five days.

The police preliminary report indicates that on March 21 at around 9:40 am, a woman named Afekum Baifa, who was accompanied by her friend Chandiru Beatrice, gave birth by caesarean section to twins, a boy and a girl.

While the mother was asleep, her helper was called by Drateru Jelly, a midwife, to escort her to the placenta pit and dispose of urine and the discarded placenta. Upon her return, she discovered that the female twin was missing.

“A search was conducted in the Hospital but they did not find the baby,” said the police.

The matter was then reported to the police, who summoned the Hospital staff before arresting a few of them.

“Efforts are in place to trace and recover the stolen baby, as we caution new mothers to be wary of strangers, some of whom are thieves, targeting their babies. We would also like to remind Hospital Managers to strengthen measures at Maternity Wards that protect new mothers and their children,” said the police.
