The 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit kicked off this afternoon and will run for five days at the Speke Resort Munyonyo Convention Centre. During the summit, Uganda will assume the chairmanship of the 120-member country alliance until 2027.

With over 100 countries in attendance, the Minister for ICT and National Guidance, Dr Chris Baryomunsi, has called upon Ugandans to embody the country’s welcoming spirit.

According to Baryomunsi, the government is well aware that Ugandans are facing several challenges, but he urged them, especially those who stay or work along the main routes that will be used by the visiting Heads of State and delegates, to smile.

“We request all Ugandans to work together, and we welcome our visitors. Put aside what is bothering us and put on a smile to welcome the visitors because they will go back when they are impressed. These are visitors for us as Ugandans,” said Baryomunsi.

The Munyonyo Convention Centre will play host to the summit, attracting more than 4,000 delegates from around the world.

The summit not only provides a platform for diplomatic engagements but also offers an opportunity for Uganda to showcase its cultural richness and tourist attractions, among other things.
