The President of the Uganda Netball Federation, Babirye Kityo Sarah, is set to appear before the Anti-Corruption Court in Kololo this afternoon after being arrested on Wednesday.
Kityo was arrested and taken to the Criminal Intelligence Directorate (CID) headquarters in Kibuli for interrogation.
Reports indicate that the cause of her arrest is related to accountability for the Namibia 2021 Tournament.
Kityo is accused of failing to account for Shs186 million that she received from the National Council of Sports a few days before the She Cranes left for Namibia.
Speaking to journalists as she walked into the courtroom, Kityo said, “They’re now panicking, looking at all ways to cover up their dirt. They told me to account for 425m, and now they are asking for 186m, but I’m still strong. They will die in their own movie.”
The arrest comes at a time when Kityo, the former Youth Member of Parliament representing the Central Region, is on indefinite suspension from her office as the Uganda Netball Federation President. This was to allow a special committee instituted by the Minister of Sports and Education, Janet Kataaha Museveni, to investigate allegations of abuse of office and financial mismanagement.
The directive placed Brigadier Flavia Byekwaso as the interim President of the Federation.
Additionally, the National Council of Sports revoked the license of the Netball Federation.
