The Nakawa Chief Magistrate’s Court has remanded four suspects in connection with the brutal murder of former Assistant Director of Public Prosecutions, Joan Namazzi Kagezi.
The accused, identified as Daniel Kisekka Kiwanuka, John Kibuuka (alias Musa), Nasur Abdallah Mugongole, and John Masajjage, were brought to the court under tight security, escorted by counter-terrorism police and heavily armed prison warders. They face charges related to the murder of Joan Kagezi, a prominent public institution officer, on March 30, 2015, in Kiwatule, Nakawa Division, Kampala District.
During the court proceedings, it was revealed that the accused individuals, accompanied by other suspects still at large, orchestrated the shooting of Kagezi. They were charged with the indiscriminate attack and murder of Kagezi, an act believed to have been carried out with the intent of influencing the government or intimidating the public.
While the accused were not represented by legal counsel, Chief Magistrate Erias Kakooza, lacking jurisdiction over the case, remanded the suspects to their respective prisons until November 20, 2023, pending ongoing investigations.
Deputy Spokesperson of the office of the DPP, Irene Nakimbugwe, confirmed that the accused individuals, previously convicted for aggravated robbery, are being actively pursued for their alleged involvement in the murder. Additionally, Nakimbugwe clarified the office’s stance, assuring the public that the real suspects behind Kagezi’s murder have been identified.
