The Directorate of Crime Intelligence carried out successful operations on June 20 and June 22, resulting in the recovery of two firearms and the arrest of nine members belonging to two notorious criminal gangs.
According to the police spokesperson, Fred Enanga, the teams executed targeted operations based on valuable intelligence that aimed to apprehend the assailants responsible for numerous robberies in Greater Kampala.
During the operation on June 20, Kasozi Paul was apprehended around 11 pm on Wakaliga Road. The subsequent search of his vehicle, a Mark Grand Silver with registration number UAH 874H, led to the discovery of a police gun, an AK-47 loaded with a magazine of 30 rounds, in the car’s boot. Kasozi’s arrest proved pivotal in unraveling the criminal network, as it led the security teams to nab his accomplices in Nabbingo. Among those arrested were Luwemba Geoffrey, also known as General, Ssempira Kato Arafat, Bukenya Peter, alias Imran, and Wasswa Akram.
Further interrogation of the suspects revealed their involvement in four aggravated robberies. These include the robbery of Shs3 million from Ndagire Sylvia, a mobile money operator at Kinawa trading center, Bandwe cell, Kasenge in Kyengera-Wakiso, the robbery of Shs1.5 million and phones from Nkalubo Brian, a mobile money operator at Kinawa trading center, the robbery of Shs8 million from Nabatanzi Sarah, a mobile money operator and resident of Kitemu cell in Kyengera-Wakiso, and the robbery of Shs12 million and mobile phones from Lweere Michael, Monica, and Eddy at Nabbingo-Kiyanja zone.
On June 23, Bukenya Fred, who was allegedly responsible for reconnaissance in all the Nsangi robberies, was arrested along Masaka Road in Kyengera. With his arrest, the total number of suspects connected to the armed robberies reached six. The police are currently intensifying efforts to apprehend two other notorious accomplices identified as Isma Bamujje and Kakooza, also known as Soldier.
Enanga disclosed that the criminal gang had established its stronghold in Nabbingo. The apprehended individuals are now facing six counts of Aggravated Robbery and are undergoing due process.
In a separate operation on June 22, Kabalagala Police received vital information regarding a suspected robber involved in the aggravated robbery and murder of a policeman in Kassanda district on June 19.
Following this lead, Ssegawa Farook, a boda boda rider and resident of Kassanda district, was apprehended. Upon his arrest, Farook cooperated with the authorities and provided information leading to the capture of his accomplices, Okitoi Simon, arrested on June 23, 2023, in Kamwokya, and Olupot Dan Joseph, apprehended in Kanyogoga Kansanga. The successful arrests also resulted in the recovery of a SAR 47 gun along with 17 rounds of ammunition.
Enanga highlighted the grave dangers posed by such armed criminal gangs in communities. He reassured the public that the police force remains committed to conducting robust operations aimed at disrupting and dismantling criminal networks not only within the suburbs of Kampala Metropolitan areas but also across the country.
