Why MP Basalirwa’s JEEMA party wants Bobi Wine to apologize

The opposition Justice Forum (JEEMA) party has asked the leader of the National Unity Platform (NUP), Robert Kyagulanyi alias Bobi Wine to retract his comments regarding the recently enacted Anti-Homosexuality Act, 2023.

In a letter dated December 4, JEEMA’s secretary-general, Mohamed Katerega, expressed disappointment over Kyagulanyi’s perceived evasion on the matter.

Kyagulanyi voiced his concerns during an interview with the international broadcaster BBC, claiming that the law, which received overwhelming support from over 90% of Members of Parliament, was not passed in the interest of Ugandans but rather as a tool to suppress the opposition.

He further alleged that some opposition MPs collaborate with President Museveni.

JEEMA, in its letter, called on Kyagulanyi to retract his statements and demonstrate a commitment to fostering a culture of respect and cooperation with fellow leaders.

“We call upon you to retract your pronouncement and demonstrate your commitment to fostering a culture of respect and cooperation with fellow leaders,” the letter stated.

It is worth noting that Asuman Basalirwa, the president of JEEMA, introduced the controversial Anti-Homosexuality Bill, 2023.
