Speaker of Parliament, Anita Among, has finally accepted the appointment of Mawokota South MP, Yusuf Nsibambi, as the new whip for the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party within Parliament.

This decision follows the dismissal of Kira Municipality MP, Ibrahim Ssemujju, by the FDC party’s Secretary General, Nathan Nandala Mafabi.

Yusuf Nsibambi was initially appointed as the FDC party whip in August. However, a group of FDC MPs, led by Buhweju County MP, Francis Mwijukye, challenged his appointment, claiming it did not adhere to the FDC Party’s constitution.

In response to this petition, the Speaker postponed the approval of Nsibambi’s appointment.

The Speaker’s letter explained, “I was compelled by the petition to hold off on the appointment. Consequently, I suspended the FDC Party’s action until they could address the internal concerns raised in the petition.”

Nevertheless, the Speaker reversed her earlier decision on Wednesday, giving the green light to Yusuf Nsibambi’s appointment.

She stated, “The court has ruled that the FDC national delegates conference had the authority to appoint new office bearers. Therefore, I would like to extend my congratulations to Honorable Nsibambi as the new FDC Party whip in Parliament.”

The FDC Party, consisting of 31 members, is one of the seven political parties represented in the House.
