Football transfers, especially in Europe, often grab major headlines. In Uganda, these transfers usually make the news when a player secures a ‘dream’ move to a big club in one of the well-known world leagues.

However, when highly promising players switch to rival teams, the Ugandan transfer market also generates considerable attention.

On Thursday, the talented playmaker Allan Okello, a former favourite at KCCA FC, made a surprising move by joining rivals Vipers SC, signing a three-year contract.

Okello has been closely associated with KCCA FC, having graduated from their academy and made his senior team debut in February 2017. It was at KCCA that he developed into one of Ugandan football’s most promising stars.

His consistent performances drew the attention of Algerian giants Paradou AC, who secured his services on a four-year deal. However, Okello returned to KCCA on loan last season, where he made a significant impact with eight assists and five goals.

Earlier this month, Paradou terminated his contract, leaving him as a free agent. Initially, many reports suggested he would rejoin KCCA FC, but on the Ugandan transfer market’s deadline day, the 23-year-old made the unexpected move to Vipers.

This transfer has sparked mixed reactions from fans and football analysts.

Veteran journalist John Vianney Nsiimbe remarked, “The Allan Okello transfer to Vipers from KCCA FC is arguably the most controversial since the Mubiru and Sunguti one involving SC Villa and Express FC. At that time, it could have turned into a war between those fans. One moment they were joyful, and the next, they were crying. Then it turned.”

Sandrah Nassali expressed her concerns, saying, “I won’t blame Allan Okello if he struggles at Kitende because Vipers doesn’t have the right coach to bring out the best in him.”

Isaac Emrang expressed his disappointment, saying, “The worst day of my life was seeing Allan Okello crossing to Kitende. I am literally gutted by this move.”

Romantic Mukiga shared his feelings, saying, “That Allan Okello signing has hurt me. I thought he’d come back to Lugogo.”

@Micheal emphasized Allan Okello’s happiness, stating, “I will be happy to see him back enjoying his football. Of course, it seems strange and won’t feel okay at all for most KCCA fans. But for me, his happiness comes first, and if he’s happy, then I’m sure we’ll see the best Allan Okello again.”

Geno Eric, a KCCA FC fan, expressed his hope, saying, “Allan Okello really??? One day God will wipe my tears.”

@only1banad indicated his skepticism, saying, “That Allan Okello move won’t register in my head until Fabrizio Romano confirms it.”

@abadaaki showed enthusiasm, saying, “Happy to see Allan Okello at Vipers SC. Let’s get the UPL trophy already.”
