Tarsis Orogot, a promising Ugandan athlete who is currently pursuing a degree in Sports Management at the University of Alabama, has captured the spotlight with his spirited performance at the 2023 World Athletics Championships.
Orogot’s determination propelled him to qualify for the 200m final, marking a significant milestone in his athletic journey.
His journey to the semifinals was nothing short of impressive, as he secured his spot as one of the top three fastest runners-up across all heats. In his Heat, he finished fourth with a time of 20.44 seconds.
His presence at the Championships is especially noteworthy, as he becomes only the second Ugandan sprinter to compete in this distance since Davis Kamoga’s participation in 1997.
Set to return to the track this evening at 9:20pm, Orogot faces a formidable lineup of opponents, including renowned names like Noah Lyles, Letsile Tebogo, Erriyon Knighton, Andre de Grasse, and Zharnel Hughes. The race promises to be a thrilling display of speed.
Orogot’s foray into international championships began in 2021 when he showcased his potential at the U20 World Championship in Nairobi. There, he left a mark by securing fourth place in the 200-meter dash with an impressive time of 20.57 seconds. Notably, he set a new Ugandan national record in the semifinals, clocking in at 20.37 seconds.
In the same championship, Orogot also showcased his versatility by reaching the semifinals in the 100m sprint, where he clocked a time of 10.37 seconds before being eliminated.
Fast forward to 2023, representing the University of Alabama, Orogot continued to make waves. His exceptional performance saw him clock an impressive time of 20.20 seconds for the 200m indoors, setting a world-leading mark in Albuquerque and underlining his status as a rising star in the world of sprinting.
