Sports Minister Ogwang: She Cranes coach has no contract with the netball federation

The State Minister for Sports, Peter Ogwang, has said that the head coach of Uganda’s national netball team, Fred Mugerwa has no formal contract with the Uganda Netball Federation (UNF).

Earlier this week, Mugerwa, who embarked on his second stint as head coach in 2021, revealed that he has not received a salary for two years.

His confession sparked public outcry, with many demanding the sports ministry take action.

However, Minister Ogwang took to social media on Wednesday to address the situation. He revealed that while Mugerwa does not possess a contract with the UNF, there exists a mutual understanding between them.

According to Ogwang’s tweet, Mugerwa is enlisted to offer his services to the national team when required, and his compensation is in the form of allowances.

The tweet reads, “I have quickly established that the National Netball Coach does not have a contract with Uganda Netball Federation. The Federation only has a mutual understanding with the coach to provide services to the team whenever called upon and would only be entitled to allowances.”

Ogwang continued, explaining that Mugerwa has been receiving allowances from the Federation for his duties, including his recent successful campaign in South Africa.

The minister has, however, pledged to take proactive steps to ensure that the Uganda Netball Federation signs a temporary contract with Coach Mugerwa, thus guaranteeing him a regular monthly salary.
