Uganda’s historic streak continues: Gazelles storm  Afrobasket quarterfinals for the first time

The Gazelles

Uganda’s national women’s basketball team, The Gazelles, secured an impressive victory against DR Congo, triumphing 78-62 to advance to the quarterfinals of the 2023 FIBA Afrobasket tournament held in Rwanda.

Despite a strong start by DR Congo, who took a 15-12 lead in the initial stages, The Gazelles rallied during the second quarter, outscoring their opponents 18-15 to reach halftime deadlocked at 30-30.

The pivotal moment of the game unfolded in the third quarter, as The Gazelles surged ahead with an 8-point advantage, showcasing their remarkable prowess on the court.

Although DR Congo made a valiant effort in the final quarter, amassing 25 points, it was not enough to overcome The Gazelles, who managed to secure 17 points and maintain their lead.

Once again, Jannon Otto proved to be an instrumental force in The Gazelles’ offensive strategy, leading the charge with an impressive 18 points and 9 rebounds. Jane Asinde equally contributed 18 points, bolstering Uganda’s total score.

Notably, Hope Akello demonstrated her prowess on the boards, leading Uganda’s rebounding effort with an impressive tally of 11 boards.

As Uganda’s journey in the tournament continues, they are set to face Rwanda in the quarterfinals this evening, with their sights set on securing a spot in the coveted Final Four.

This remarkable achievement would mark another historic milestone for Uganda, a feat they have yet to accomplish in their two prior participations at FIBA Africa’s premier women’s basketball event.
