Why Vipers Head Coach Alex Isabirye resigned after four months in charge

Vipers Sports Club’s Head Coach Alex Isabirye has tendered his resignation, despite leading the club to its first-ever cup double.

Isabirye’s resignation letter, dated July 12th, 2023, stated that the main reason behind his departure was a breach of his employment contract. The letter highlighted specific clauses, specifically Article 5, Sections 3 and 4, which outlined his responsibilities to endorse player recruitment and select his assistant team/staff in consultation with club management.

Isabirye expressed his disappointment, stating that he was not informed about the recruitment of three current team members: assistant coach Raoul Lukusa Kayembe, as well as Brazilian players Giancarlo Lopez and Luis ‘Tinga’ Otavio Santos.

The coach felt aggrieved by these serious breaches and considered the conduct unreasonable. Isabirye, who had previously coached URA and BUL, had been unveiled as Vipers’ Head Coach on March 12th of the same year. Throughout his four-month tenure, he successfully managed the team in over 20 games.

Isabirye’s resignation came shortly after he was summoned by club CEO Simon Peter Njuba to appear before the disciplinary committee for alleged absenteeism. However, the club is yet to respond to his resignation letter, which has already been circulated.
