Soldier arrested after thugs shoot one dead, steal Shs72m from mobile money shop

Jinja Road Police are currently investigating an incident of aggravated robbery that happened in Luzira, Stage 7 Zone in Nakawa Division on Friday at around 9:30pm.

According to reports, Bahati Aggrey and Nyamukulu Annah were closing their Mobile Money outlet when two armed thugs struck. Gunshots rang out, causing panic, and in the chaos, Bahati Aggrey managed to escape, leaving Nyamukulu trapped inside the shop.

The criminals broke into the shop, making off with a staggering Shs72 million. As they fled, they encountered members of the public who attempted to intervene. The thugs opened fire, resulting in the death of Ssenyondo Richard, a 38-year-old businessperson from Mutungo, Nakawa Division, and the injury of Nakigudde Betty.

Although the thugs evaded capture by the members of the public, Jinja Road Police managed to arrest two suspects: Guma Vincent, a 34-year-old soldier residing in Kikubamutwe army barracks along Kayunga Road, and Mugerwa Darglous, a 47-year-old legal assistant from Lakeside Luzira.

An AK-47 firearm was recovered as evidence. A team of police officers from the Kampala Metropolitan Police East and Jinja Road Police Divisions rushed to the crime scene to gather statements from witnesses.

The body of the deceased, Ssenyondo Richard, was taken to the City Mortuary in Mulago for a postmortem examination, as the investigation into the incident continues.
