Gov’t delays rollout of digital number plates for four months

The Ministry of Works and Transport has announced the suspension of the planned rollout of digital number plates for an additional four months.

Initially scheduled for July 1, 2023, the mass implementation of the digital number plates has been postponed to allow for further preparations, according to a statement by State Minister for Works and Transport, Fred Byamukama.

Byamukama clarified that the regulations pertaining to digital number plates, empowered by Section 178 of the Traffic and Road Safety Act, 1998, will now come into effect on October 31, 2023.

This statutory amendment aims to provide the government with ample time to adequately prepare and educate the public about the significance and relevance of this service in enhancing road safety and security.

Simultaneously, the government has extended the contracts of the current number plate service providers, M/S Arnold Brooklyn Company Ltd and M/S GM Tumpeco Ltd, for an additional four months until October 31.
