A gang of four armed men, suspected of being involved in numerous mobile money robberies, has been arrested by operatives from the Police Flying Squad.

Deputy Police Spokesperson, Polly Namaye, disclosed that the Crime Intelligence directorate collaborated with Nsangi Police to track down the armed gang responsible for targeting mobile money operators.

Namaye revealed that the Flying Squad Unit successfully recovered a police AK-47 rifle, which had been stolen from a police officer attached to Nsangi Police Division on May 29, 2023.

Since then, the police have recorded four mobile money incidents, with one victim surviving an attempted murder by shooting when they attempted to raise an alarm.

Earlier this week, CCTV footage capturing a mobile money shop robbery in Mubende went viral on social media. During the police pursuit of the gang, Officer Olaya Joseph tragically lost his life in the line of duty. The suspects also seized a gun magazine belonging to the deceased officer.

Following the operations on Tuesday and Wednesday, the security operatives arrested four suspects and also recovered the motor vehicle used in the robberies.

“Our analysis, interrogations, and thorough examination of various crime scenes have led us to confirm that the recovered firearm was indeed used in multiple recent robberies committed by this syndicate,” said Namaye.

She reassured the public that all individuals involved in targeting mobile money dealers will be brought to book, emphasizing the commitment of the police to maintaining public safety.
