Police bust criminal gang specialising in spare parts theft

Some of the recovered spare parts.

The Directorate of Crime Intelligence, in collaboration with Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) and Mukono Police, have carried out a successful intelligence-led operation targeting an organized criminal gang. The gang was notorious for its involvement in the theft and vandalism of spare parts from long-distance trucks, lorries, and trailers parked in vulnerable locations such as roadsides, fuel stations, and parking lots.

During the operation conducted in Bugembe, Katwe, and Nakanyonyi areas of Jinja City, suspected stolen spare parts were recovered, as confirmed by Police spokesperson Fred Enanga.

Enanga explained that the gang operated by posing as vehicle repairers, only to dismantle and steal the spare parts.

The operation led to the arrest of five suspects identified as Sendagire Muhammad, Matege Dan, Mukasa Robert, Muhindo Joseph, and Jagwe Arthur.

Upon searching the suspects’ known locations, the Police successfully recovered 58 axles, two diffs, and two gearboxes, which were stolen from six trucks.

Enanga said that a serious manhunt is on to capture the remaining criminal gang members.
