Medipal Hospital evicted over Shs1.3bn rent arrears

Medipal International Hospital, a prominent private medical facility located in upscale Kololo, Kampala, has been evicted by the management of Tembo Steels (U) Ltd (the building’s owners) due to unpaid rent arrears amounting to UGX 1.3 billion. The eviction notice was served to Dr. Adnan Khan, the proprietor of the hospital.

The eviction was enforced by Securex a private security company, whose guards closed the hospital earlier today, leaving only one exit point for both patients and medics at the facility.

In an eviction notice served to the hospital proprietor Dr Adnan Khan, the rent arrears had been accumulating since June of last year, and the tenant had promised to clear the outstanding amount by September the same year. Despite numerous reminders and meetings, Medipal failed to fulfill its payment obligations.

The notice from Tembo Steels, authored by Manish Kalia, the General Manager, stated that the outstanding rent amount of $365,557 (approximately UGX 1.3 billion) had to be paid by September 30, 2022, and the hospital was required to vacate the premises by December 31, 2022.

Documents reveal that Medipal International Hospital was supposed to pay monthly rent of $26,000 (about UGX 97 million).

 The hospital had gained prominence during the Covid-19 pandemic had been frequented by high-profile individuals from government, business community, and military.
