Uganda’s oldest public university, Makerere University, has maintained a position among the top 1000 universities worldwide according to the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR).
The rankings, unveiled on Monday, May 15, place Makerere University at the 950th position, surpassing all other universities in East and Central Africa.
The University of Nairobi in Kenya follows as the second-best university in East Africa, securing the 1,425th position in the global rankings.
However, Makerere University experienced a decline of five places compared to the previous CWUR rankings. This drop is attributed to a decrease in the employability score and research output.
Leading the list are renowned US institutions such as Harvard University, Massachusetts University, and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, among others.
The Center for World University Rankings is recognized for its unique approach in evaluating global universities.
It assesses the quality of education, alumni employment, faculty competence, and research performance without relying on surveys or university data submissions.
CWUR utilizes seven objective and robust indicators categorized into four areas to rank universities worldwide, which include education, employability, faculty, and research.
