2023 AFCON Qualifiers: ‘Homeless’ Uganda Crane to host Algeria in Cameroon

Local football governing body, FUFA has confirmed that the Uganda Cranes will not be able to host their next 2023 AFCON qualifiers game against Algeria at Namboole Stadium.

After hosting Tanzania in Egypt last month, the Minister of State for Sports, Hon. Peter Ogwang promised that the next home game for the Cranes would be played at Namboole. He said that Namboole would be ready to host the game.

However, according to FUFA, the deadline set by CAF for all federations to submit names of venues to be used for the qualifiers due in June passed.

“The FUFA Executive has taken a decision to host the Uganda Cranes next AFCON 2023 home fixture against Algeria in Cameroon,” said FUFA.

FUFA explained that they inspected Namboole on Monday and confirmed that the Stadium is not ready to host the qualifiers that resume in June.

“The work is very slow and insensitive to cries of the public to be able to host the matches in Uganda,” said FUFA.

With only two games to the conclusion of the qualifiers, Uganda needed home advantage to be able to make it to the AFCON finals in Ivory Coast.

Algeria tops Group F with 12 points, Uganda and Tanzania have four points while Niger seats rock bottom with two points.
