IRON SHEETS SCANDAL: Karamoja Affairs Minister Kitutu granted bail

Karamoja affairs minister, Mary Goretti Kitutu has been granted by the Anti-Corruption Court sitting in Kololo, Kampala.

The minister, who has been on remand at Luzira Prison for a week was asked to pay a cash bail of Shs10 million while her five sureties were asked for a non-cash bail of Shs200m each.

The minister’s sureties include; Gidudu Mafabi Dominic, the minister of state for elderly people, Hon. Wakholi Godfrey, MP Bukiru County in Manafwa district, and Hon. Christopher Werike, MP for Bubulo County West in Manafwa district.

Others are; Gregory Mafabi a businessman in Mbale City and Bungokho North constituency MP Magolo John Faith as well as Seth Wambede, MP for Mbale City North Division.

Kitutu was also ordered to deposit her two land titles on Block 241 plots 1265 and 1264 situated in Wakiso district before the court as security to ensure her return whenever required.

The minister’s brother, Michael Naboya, was also granted cash bail of Shs3 million and his sureties were bonded at Shs100 million each (not cash).

They return to court on April 27 2023.

The minister and her brother are charged alongside Joshua Abaho, the Senior Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Karamoja Affairs Office of the Prime Minister.

According to the charge sheet, Kitutu allegedly caused a loss of public property between June 2022 and January 2023 by diverting 9,000 pre-painted iron sheets intended for the Karamoja Community Empowerment Program to her own benefit and that of third parties.

It is also alleged that in January 2023, Kitutu diverted 5,500 iron sheets, and her brother received 100 of them in Namisindwa district.
