The National Unity Platform (NUP) will not field a candidate in the Serere county Parliamentary by-election.

The position became vacant following the death of the area MP, Patrick Okabe in December last year.

Speaking to journalists this morning, Joel Ssenyonyi, the NUP spokesperson, said that in the spirit of working together as the opposition, they agreed to support Alliance for National Transformation (ANT) candidate Alice Alaso.

“As we have consistently told the nation, the National Unity Platform strongly believes in the unity of the forces of change at the core and this is yet another gesture to prove our commitment to that unity.

“We are grateful to the would-be aspirants under NUP who exercised great maturity and agreed to delay their ambitions for the greater good of the struggle for a better nation,” said Ssenyonyi.

Last month, ANT decided to field Alaso who was once the woman MP for Soroti district after calls from voters urging her to go back to parliament and represent their voice.

Alaso pledged to offer effective representation, act as a unifying factor to the divided Serere region, and be an advocate in defending human rights.

“As you know we lost a leader and the process is a constitutional process. My commitment is that they (Serere people) will be well represented in the Parliament of Uganda,” Alaso said.

According to the roadmap announced by the Electoral Commission, the nomination of candidates will be conducted on February 9 and 10, 2023, at the Office of the District Returning Officer, Serere.

Nominated candidates will conduct campaign meetings for nine (9) days, that is, from February 13 to `February 21, 2023.

Polling and tallying of results for the by-election of Member of Parliament will be conducted on February 23, 2023.
