“It’s too little,” Kanungu man not happy after court ordered woman who refused to marry him to only pay Shs10 million

Richard Tumwine, a 40-year-old Kanungu resident who paid Fortunate Kyarikunda’s tuition to finish her studies at the Law Development Centre in the hopes of marrying her, is dissatisfied with the court’s decision to award him only Sh10 million in compensation.

Kyarikunda was ordered last week by Asanasio Mukobi, the Magistrate Grade One in Kanungu, to pay legal fees and return the money that was spent on her.

Although Tumwine was pleased that the court ruled in his favor, he feels that the Shs10 million Kyarikunda was ordered to pay was insufficient.

“I spent over Shs9m on her tuition. I incurred legal costs and damages. As a result, the Sh10 million is insufficient. I want at least Shs15 million,” said Tumwine in an interview with NTV.

Tumwine claims that Kyarikunda requested his financial support for her education in 2015; he agreed in the hopes that they would get married after her diploma.

He was nevertheless devastated when Kyarikunda turned down his marriage proposal because, in her words, she wasn’t prepared.

“I asked her when she would be ready, and she told me I should get someone who is ready,” Tumwine said.

“This prompted me to take legal action as she refused to even refund the money I invested in her education,” he added.
