Gen. Elly Tumwine has been laid to rest in Mukuru village, Rwemikoma sub-county, Kazo district.
The former army commander and Security Minister was accorded a 17-gun salute.
The chief mourner was Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja, who described Tumwine as a great patriot, freedom fighter, and genuine friend. She said that GenTumwine was a man who spoke what he believed to be true no matter what.
The other dignitaries that attended Tumwine’s final send-off were Minister of State for Defence, Hon. Oboth Oboth, Minister of Security, Maj. Gen. Jim Muhwezi, former Security Minister Lt. Gen. (rtd) Henry Tumukunde, Minister of Works and Transport General Edward Katumba Wamala; and former Army Commander Maj. Gen. Mugisha Muntu, among others.
Tumwine served the country in different capacities, and one of her daughters, Edna Tumwine, asked the public to forgive their daddy.
“Daddy talked about forgiveness during his last moments on earth. I ask for forgiveness from all those my dad wronged and even those who wronged him, he forgave you. May we choose forgiveness and peace from now on,” she said.
The bush war veteran succumbed to cancer last Thursday at Aga Khan Hospital in Nairobi.
