Five prisoners dead, several injured as prison truck crashes in Luweero

Five inmates have died and several others sustained injuries after a lorry carrying prisoners was involved in an accident in Luweero.

The Traffic Police Publicist, Faridah Nampiima, confirmed the incident, saying the accident happened this morning at around 9:45 am.

Nampiima explained that the prison truck was carrying 54 inmates and 12 warders from Butuntumula prison.

“The accident happened when a Toyota Fielder moving from the Gulu side had a tyre burst, lost control, and rammed into an oncoming prison truck. In trying to avoid the small vehicle, the truck overturned, killing the five prisoners instantly, ”Nampiima said.

She also revealed that the injured have been rushed to Kasana Health Facility and Luweero Referral Hospital.

The vehicles involved in the accident have been towed to Luweero Central Police Station.
