Uganda’s long-distance runner, Joshua Cheptegei, will attempt to break his own 5000m world record today at the Prefontaine Classic in Oregon, USA. Oregon will host the World Championships from July 15–24.
Cheptegei holds the current 5000m world record with a time of 12:35:36, which he set on August 14, 2020, in Monaco. He chipped 1.99 seconds off Kenenisa Bekele’s previous mark of 12:37.35, set in May 2004.
The 5000m and 10000m world record holder will again be eyeing another historic moment at Hayward Field.
“I am excited to race at Hayward Field again. 5000m it is!! ” Cheptegei posted on his social media platforms.
This year, the Olympic champion has made only one appearance as he won the Nice 10Km race with a time of 26:49.
