Jailed National Unity Platform (NUP) legislators, Allan Ssewanyana and Muhammad Ssegirinya, have expressed interest in taking on the Speakership race.
Ssewanyana expressed interest in becoming the Speaker, while Ssegirinya wants the deputy Speaker position, should it fall vacant.
The legislators, who have been further remanded, say the election of the Speakership should be halted since they cannot take part.
However, their law Lord Mayor, Erias Lukwago, demanded that the duo be released so that they can take part in the next Speaker of Parliament.
The two MPs were rearrested in September last year, shortly after being granted bail on related offenses of murder and terrorism, which they allegedly committed in the greater Masaka sub-region between July and August 2021.
