The Kira Municipality Member of Parliament, Hon. Ssemujju Nganda has urged the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) to involve the opposition in discussions on the speakership race.
“I hope we have a discussion with NRM to arrive at who becomes the Speaker of Parliament, so we don’t have a chaotic experience like we did last time,” said Ssemujju.
According to Ssemujju, If NRM is well mannered, they should take the Speakership position and allow the opposition to take the Deputy Speaker of Parliament position.
The legislator, however, said that if they cannot reach terms with NRM, he will contest for the position.
“If they don’t accept, then I will offer myself for this position,” he said.
Last year, Ssemujju contested for the Speakership position and got 15 votes.
Ssemujju anticipates that NRM will make Deputy Speaker of Parliament Anita Among their flag bearer.
On qualities of a person that deserves to be Speaker of Parliament, Ssemujju said, “We don’t just need a lawyer to be the Speaker. We need someone who is empathetic and will take care of the MPs. We need to arrive at a consensus candidate to ensure harmony in Parliament.”
