Hajji Haroun Muwonge popularly known as Ham, for his Ham Sounds Public Address system business, passed on yesterday January February 1st 2022.
The rich and famous, top Islam and Christian clerics, the young and old, Wilson Street dealers, gregarious people, bouncers, Djs, artistes, journalists, gathered in hundreds at the Lugala Masjid in Butambala to see off Hajji Haroun on the afternoon of February 2nd 2022.
Many people took to their social media pages to mourn the late Haroun with touching and moving messages about the selfless hustler that always extended a helping hand.
Speaker after speaker heaped praises on the late Haroun as a gentle giant, a hardworking and trustworthy man, that handled people of all walks of life with respect.
Haroun succumbed to cancer that he only got to know about less than a year ago.
According to the widow- Sara, whom the late met when she was just fourteen years old, Haruna was rushed to India and he underwent an operation that was considered successful.
However, after returning from India, Haroun’s health never returned to normalcy.
Haroun was in and out of ICU for the better part of 2021.
“But all through his sickness, he kept assuring me and everyone that visited that he would pull through. He couldn’t speak, so I became his mouthpiece, but we agreed that he always puts up his right fist as a sign that he’s doing strong and that he would pull through,” Sara said, in a shaky tone, as he narrated to mourners.
Guvnor proprietor Charlie Lubega, described the late as an ‘irreplaceable brother and realest friend,’ that he will never find throughout his lifetime.
“I was not his boss, he was my brother. Haroun was that one person that advised me without fear. He loved me and my entire family like his own. I’ve lost a brother, and Guvnor has lost one of its strongest pillars,” Charlie told mourners.
Charlie narrated one of his last moments with Haroun; ‘I had a function at home, so I called him to send someone with two speakers to use. When they opened the gate, I was shocked to see Haroun himself with the PA system. He had put off the oxygen and decided to come and personally work at the function,” he said.
Charlie said that when the late’s health worsened, he asked him for one favor; to take care of his youngest son – Zac.
“I gave Haroun my word. Zac is now my son and I shall educate him till he gets tired of education,” a teary Charlie said, before breaking down.
Musician, cum Kakuto legislator Hon. Geoffrey Lutaaya, a childhood friend who went to school at Kololo Secondary School described the late Haroun as a humble man, high on self-respect and always wished people around him well.
“Haroun rose through the ranks to become our Head Boy at school, at a time when the school administration always had the final say in who becomes the student leader.
He was that trusted,” Lutaaya said.
Lutaaya said that the late Haroun started going to Angenoir (now Guvnor), during their school days, but he never lost his virtues.
Lutaaya also told us about Haroun’s deep relationship with his mother; “Haruna was too close to his mother. They always spoke like brother and sister. I feel for his mother, his wife and his young family.”
Ssalongo Ssekankya, the Hardware World proprietor was one of Haroun’s closest friends. He took care of all oxygen expenses for the entire time Haroun was bedridden.
Many described Haroun as kind, dedicated, loyal, selfless and very religious.
Haroun managed to keep a straight record and stayed away from the several temptations associated with his kind of work.
Haroun is survived by a widow- Sara, and three children; Afrah, Rau and Zac.
